Background

Council has allocated funding this financial year to upgrade reserves and replace ageing play equipment at two reserves - Pinewood Reserve in Golden Grove and Whinnen Reserve in St Agnes.

Replacement of the play equipment is generally equipment with a similar play 'value' or type.

Our approach to designing and planning our playspaces

There are a number of principles and factors we consider when designing our playspaces, and how we prioritise renewals, upgrades and provision of new playspaces. More information is available in our Open Space Asset Management Plan, however these principles include:

Playspace levels

The four classification levels determine the type of play equipment and supporting facilities that would typically be provided within each playspace.
  • Local

Primarily cater for people living within walking distance of the playspace. Generally smaller in size, located on less developed parks and have limited play equipment typically catering for one age group. As they are designed to cater for short term visits they don't usually include BBQs or public toilets.

  • Neighbourhood

Will offer more diverse play opportunities that draw people from a wider area compared to local playspaces. Will generally provide play opportunities for one or two age groups and may include some accessible, inclusive and sensory elements. Cater for visits typically longer than one hour.

  • District

Provide unique play opportunities designed to attract people from surrounding suburbs and across the City. Generally co-located with sporting and community hub with facilities that allow for extended visits. Provide a range of play opportunities for all ages and abilities.

  • Regional

Will be innovative and distinctive in their design and character. They attract families from across and beyond the City with facilities that support longer visits and all day events. They provide equipment that caters for all ages and abilities.
