Why plan for transport?

Our community is growing and changing. More people than ever before are choosing to call our City home. By 2051, over 42,000 more people could live here. That’s a lot more people moving around.

It’s important that we plan for transport so that we can support the liveability and sustainability of our growing neighbourhoods that are connected with efficient and accessible road, public transport and walking and cycling networks.

Transport determines how sustainable and liveable our City becomes. When homes, jobs, schools, and services are located close together, people can walk, cycle, or use public transport instead of relying on cars. This shift creates safer streets and more vibrant neighbourhoods.

Population projections

The State Government’s Greater Adelaide Regional Plan (GARP) sets out how land will be used to support growth and the infrastructure, including transport, needed to make it work. In the City of Tea Tree Gully, the GARP identifies several key areas for growth (see the maps in the full Discussion Paper). Council is exploring how and where our City will grow in the future and what kind of transport infrastructure is needed to enable liveability and productivity.

What is the Integrated Transport Strategy?

The Towards 2050 Community Conversation is informing the development of a Housing Diversity Strategy and an Integrated Transport Strategy (see Housing Fact Sheet). Both these Strategies will underpin a City Master Plan that will provide a vision and spatial framework for the City of Tea Gully across the themes of:

  • Housing Diversity
  • Integrated Transport
  • Productive Economy
  • Sustainable & Resilient Environment
  • Open Space
  • Recreation
  • Social & Community Infrastructure
  • Strategic Land
An Integrated Transport Strategy will plan for all types of movement, walking, cycling, buses and cars and making sure they work together. It also aims to make transport accessible for everyone, regardless of age, ability or income.

The Integrated Transport Strategy will provide:

  • A long-term vision for an accessible and sustainable transport network (roads, public transport, walking, cycling and parking).
  • Transport networks that support diverse housing options, population growth and changing community needs.
  • Improved local and regional connectivity that allows people to live locally reducing dependence on cars
  • A coordinated framework for infrastructure investment, land use integration, and funding and services advocacy.
